Seaweed extracts contains major and minor nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, cytokinins, auxin and abscisic acid like growth promoting substances and have been used to stimulate the growth and yield of plants, develop tolerance to environment stress.
In biological agriculture and horticulture diluted extracts of seaweed are applied to promote growth, prevent pests and diseases and improve the quality of the products. Since seaweed grows in the special environmental medium of seawater, it contains not only the nutrients possessed by land plants, but also many trace elements such as iodine, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, selenium, as well as minerals, seaweed polysaccharides, mannitol, etc, which are incomparable by land plants.

What gives the seaweed strong growth stimulating vitality?
The content of simple mineral elements and trace elements cannot explain the huge impact of these seaweed plant growth agents on crops.
The results of bioassay studies show that the seaweed stimulants not only contains the above-mentioned trace elements and minerals, but also contains many physiologically active organic compounds-plant hormones.
These active substances participate in the transportation of organic and inorganic substances in plants, and strengthen the absorption of nutrients by crops. It is the endogenous hormones that play an important role in the seaweed plant growth agent and exert a huge influence.
Active ingredient in seaweed plant growth agent
The type of cytokinin in seaweed also determines its different activity levels. The seaweeds mainly contain cytokines such as t-zeatin, dihydrozeatin, isopentenyl adenine and t-zeatin ribose.
The role of cytokinin affects almost all stages of plant growth and development, mainly promoting cytokinesis, cell expansion, regulating organ differentiation and delaying senescence.
It is a derivative of amino acid or imino acid, and has similar physiological activity to cytokinin.
Betaine participates in the transportation of various chemical substances in plants, and plays a certain role in resistance to water and salt stress. It also participates in the transport of chemical groups in some metabolic pathways.
Betaine has a good effect on promoting crop growth and improving crop quality.
As early as 1880, Darwin et al. began to notice that after some plants were blown down by the wind, they could continue to grow upwards if they were not damaged. It is believed that there is a substance in plants that can stimulate plant growth and resist lodging.
It was confirmed in 1928 that such substances in plants were auxins.
The most common plant auxin is indole acetic acid, which is widely present in many kinds of seaweeds, such as bracken, Serratia, Wakame, Sargassum, etc. In addition to indole acetic acid, seaweed also contains indole carboxylic acid (ICA), N,N-dimethyl B-indolyl ethylamine, indole acetaldehyde (IAID), isoindole and 1,3-indole Indole etc.
Studies have shown that: auxins have the effect of stimulating the development of crop roots and resistance to cold.
Gibberellin can promote plant germination, growth, flowering and prolong fruit life.

Abscisic acid (ABA), also known as severing acid, is a plant growth inhibitor, which can promote the maturation of severed cells of plants and cause organs to fall off.
